Astronomers from the Institute of Astronomy (KU Leuven) operate Mercator telescope from a distance of 3,000 km

Thanks to the technology developed by the Institute of Astronomy and the high-performance Belnet connection, (future) astronomers will be able to continue their research from 3,000 kilometres away during the COVID-19 crisis. Why FileSender is a crucial service for VIB’s researchers in life sciences and biotechnology

The Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) is a non-profit research institute, with a clear focus on groundbreaking strategic basic research in life sciences and operates in close partnership with the five universities in Flanders. Scientists at VIB conduct pioneering research across a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from cancer, inflammation and neuroscience to plant biology. To exchange huge amounts of data with the scientists of the different VIB labs and other academic researchers, the organisation makes extensive use of Belnet FileSender. We spoke to Marcus Fislage, Cryo-EM manager at VIB/VUB.

Laura Standaert, Data Steward at UGent, talks about DMPonline.be

Laura Standaert is Data Steward at UGent for the Life Sciences & Medicine cluster, which includes the Faculties of Medicine, Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Together with four other Data Stewards and two Data Curators, she works within the Open Science Team to provide professional support to researchers (from PhD level upwards) in the management and preservation of research data.

Interview with Kristiaan De Greve (IMEC), expert in quantum computing

Kristiaan De Greve is Programme Director of quantum computing at IMEC, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering Science at KU Leuven and visiting researcher at Harvard University. He obtained his engineering degree in electrical engineering from KU Leuven and earned his PhD on quantum bits and quantum repeaters at Stanford University. His scientific interests cover a broad spectrum, from advanced materials research, quantum mechanics and cryptography to artificial intelligence. Belnet spoke with him about the future of quantum computing, QKD and cryptography.

For Hasselt University, eduVPN is a cost-effective SaaS solution allowing easy and fast access to internal services

Since 1 June 2022, Belnet customers have been able to use the eduVPN service hosted by Belnet. In order to be certain that the open VPN solution meets the expectations of the R&E community, some customers – including Hasselt University – have been testing out eduVPN for several months in a proof of concept.
