"Although it was not easy to get to know the organisation from a distance, I can say that my onboarding went very smoothly. I could always turn to colleagues with questions or problems."

What exactly does your job entail?

“Together with the rest of the security team, I am constantly looking for ways to improve the security of Belnet and of our customers. We do this by actively searching for, testing and implementing new platforms and tools. We work closely with the other technical teams and also get input from our CISO.

There is also a lot of interaction with external parties, which makes my job very varied. For example, at the moment I am looking at a new vulnerability scanner, which will allow us to detect vulnerabilities in our infrastructure and servers even better.”

What route did you take before you ended up at Belnet?

“I earned a bachelor's degree in applied computer science, specialising in computer and cybercrime, from Howest. After that, I did an internship of 4 months at a cyber security company. My position at Belnet is my first "real" job.”

How did you end up at Belnet?

“Actually, rather by chance… during a dinner, I met the technical director of Belnet. We got talking and he told me that Belnet was still looking for people to join its security team. I applied spontaneously. I received a quick response to my application and after a successful interview, I was able to start work on an entry-level job contract.”

How did you experience your onboarding – in full coronavirus crisis?

“On the first day I was welcomed to the office by a colleague from HR and my colleagues in the Services & Security team. At that time, the coronavirus measures still allowed us to go to the office once a week. After that, we had to switch completely to working from home.

Although it was not easy to get to know the organisation from a distance, I can say that my onboarding went very smoothly. I could always turn to colleagues with questions or problems. It took me a while to get the hang of the job, but after a few months I had a good overview of how Belnet and its services work. The online sessions about the different teams at Belnet certainly contributed to this.”

What do you like about Belnet?

“The atmosphere within Belnet is really great! We are all colleagues, and I like that. The cooperation with the team is also very good, everyone is listened to. I certainly did not want to work in a multinational company where everyone is a number or title.

I was also specifically looking for a job where you can do more than just contribute to the profit of the company. In this sense, I like the fact that my work at Belnet has a social impact and reinforces the digital development of the government, colleges, universities, etc. In addition, my job is perfectly compatible with my private life, partly due to the flexible working hours.”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“I find it hard to look that far ahead. I can definitely see myself still doing the same job, but I also have many other interests. Next year, for example, I will start a postgraduate degree in industrial security.”
