FOCUS - Take part in the national cybersecurity campaign

The importance of updates and back-ups

For the 4th time already, the Centre for Cyber Security Belgium (CCB) and the Cyber Security Coalition are launching a national cybersecurity awareness campaign. This year’s campaign will be launched on 1st of October 2018 and aims to encourage all internet users to update software and regularly to back up important files. The campaign will run for the whole month of October and is part of the European cyber security month. Belnet is supporting the campaign and wants to encourage you to take part.

Why back-ups and updates remain of great importance?

Last year the world was startled by the outbreak of the WannaCry ransomware. The speed with which the hostage virus infected systems worldwide was unseen. More than 300,000 devices were infected in 150 countries. The virus could strike so quickly and hard by using an existing vulnerability in IT systems.

By performing software updates, the impact of attacks such as WannaCry can be limited if organizations and citizens quickly update their systems. Victims were faced with the choice to pay for getting back their data. Organizations and individuals who backed up their data taken hostage, could significantly reduce the damage without paying a ransom.

Support the campaign in your organisation!

The broader the campaign, the stronger we can arm ourselves against cybercrime. So we would like to encourage you to make people aware of the campaign within your organisation too!

It’s easy to take part. Register at communication@belnet.be and we will provide you with the campaign material (under embargo until 1 October at 12h). The material is available in Dutch, French, English and German. In addition to posters and banners for your website or intranet, there are also videos for social media sharing.
